Johnny Depp and Amber Heard were one of the It couples in Hollywood until their divorce in 2016. Now, Netflix the streaming giant has now unveiled a documentary of the trial following an op-ed published by the actress in the Washington Post in 2018.

In the Op-ed, she alleged that she suffered “domestic abuse” at the hands of hands of her ex-husband although she wasn’t explicitly clear. Following the document, the actor lost several investments and lost roles.

Depp then filed a $50 million defamation suit against his ex-wife, Heard who countersued for $100 million. The love story which started promisingly when they fell in love while filming 2011’s “The Rum Diary,” based on Hunter S. Thompson’s novel suddenly turned into an ugly nightmare.

For six weeks, the ex-lovers battled in court starting from April to June 2022. The trial elicited so much controversy on social media as several critics and influencers scrutinized the testimony, evidence and litigation teams.

Most seemed to favour Johnny Depp and ridiculed Amber Heard. It helped that the hearing was televised as that of a reality tv show availing several people the opportunity to witness the trial wherever they were.

Finally, the trial ended on June 1, 2022, with the jury awarding the actor $15 million (later reduced to about $10 million) and the actress $2 million in damages. Afterwards, she appealed and they settled in court in December with her paying $1 million, which he pledged to charities.

Barely two years after the controversial trial, Netflix is revisiting the battle that fascinated and shook social media. The documentary is titled Depp v. Heard” (now streaming). The documentary provided insights into the former couple’s trial.

The question is why Netflix chose to stream the trial now that the former couple has moved on with the actress starting a new life in Europe and have paid the fine. Perhaps, the documentary will provide new insights into the trial and how much their life has evolved since then.
