Angelina Jolie transforms into opera singer Maria Callas as she films the upcoming biopic Maria in Paris on Tuesday. The first images of the star’s latest project were released on Monday.
The actress and producer was playing the iconic opera singer Maria Callas as she filmed several scenes with a large cast of extras while changing into multiple outfits. One look showed her wrapped in a chic black fur trench coat with a matching bowler, leather gloves and oversized spectacles.
Another look featured Jolie in Paris rocking a tan tweed sport coat and matching pencil skirt as she kept her raven locks swept up in a loose bun. A third outfit saw the actress in a long black winter coat and a bright red scarf wrapped around her head, which was set off by large sunglasses and a dangling necklace.
On sneak peek of the upcoming biopic captures the Oscar winner giving it her all to channel Maria Callas, one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century who passed away in 1977 at the young age of 53.
Jolie starring in Maria ‘explores the life of the legendary, iconic and controversial singer, often described as the original diva,’ according to its official description. ‘Based on true accounts, the upcoming biopic tells the story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer during her final days in 1970s Paris.’
The Paris set photos follow the first look photos released yesterday and show the actress in a few close-up snaps of her as Callas. Opera singer Maria Callas is known for her incredible range on stage as well as her turbulent love life with Aristotle Onassis, who went on to wed Jackie Kennedy.
‘I take very seriously the responsibility to Maria’s life and legacy,’ Angelina Jolie said previously in a statement. ‘I will give all I can to meet the challenge.’ The star also mentioned the film’s director, Pablo Larraín, whom she said she had ‘long admired.’
Then added, ‘To be allowed the chance to tell more of Maria’s story with him, and with a script by Steven Knight, is a dream.’ Larrain said: ‘Having the chance to combine my two most deep and personal passions, cinema and opera, has been a long-awaited dream.
‘To do this with Angelina Jolie, a supremely brave and curious artist, is a fascinating opportunity. A true gift.’ Then added, ‘I am incredibly excited to start production on ‘Maria,’ which I hope will bring Maria Callas’s remarkable life and work to audiences all around the world, thanks to the magnificent script by Steve Knight, the work of the entire cast and crew.’
Alongside the actress, the cast of Maria includes Pierfrancesco Favino (Adagio), Alba Rohrwacher (La Chimera), Haluk Bilginer (Winter Sleep), Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog) and Valeria Golino (Portrait of a Lady on Fire). The upcoming biopic is sure to garner Oscar buzz with such Hollywood heavyweights in the mix.
