In a completely unprecedented move, King Charles has spoken out against Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The king made the remarks during a speech to the French Senate this morning, describing the war as “horrifying.”

He stated that Ukraine must win its war and invoke the Second World War unity of Britain and De Gaulle’s Free French movement as an example of the necessity to stand together against “unprovoked aggression on our continent.”

He continued, seamlessly moving from English to French, “Together we are steadfast in our determination that Ukraine will triumph and that our cherished freedoms will prevail.”

It is not the first time the King has spoken out against Russia’s invasion, in what has been perceived as a significant departure from his mother, Queen Elizabeth,’s, nuanced pronouncements on the war and other foreign issues.

Charles responded to Putin’s tactics as “brutal aggression” shortly after the conflict began in February 2022, when he was Prince of Wales.

In an August address to President Zelensky, he alluded to the war as “the challenging year” that Ukraine had undergone.

“The people of Ukraine have suffered unimaginably from an unprovoked full-scale attack on their nation,” the King stated on the anniversary of the invasion.

“They have shown truly remarkable courage and resilience in the face of such human tragedy.”

A month later, King Charles mentioned the conflict again when addressing the German Bundestag, easily switching between English and German.

He stated that Russia’s aggression “threatens the security of Europe” and praised the nation’s continuous assistance to Ukraine.

“Germany’s decision to send such significant military support to Ukraine is remarkably courageous, important, and appreciated,” the King said.
