Barbie won the Barbenheimer contest with $70.5M against its rival blockbuster Oppenheimer which comes in third as it debuted with $33M.
Both movies were released on July 21st and now the results are out. The Mattel doll movie surpassed all expectations as it beat the bomb movie hands down.
Barbie was played by Margot Robbie as the lead and Ryan Gosling as Ken. The movie has now taken the position as the movie with the highest opening day in 2023 with $70.5 in ticket sales on Friday.
Friday, 21st July saw several celebrities and movie lovers in droves going to watch either of the films or both. Per Deadline, the two movies are projected to turn in $308 million within three days of release.
We don’t know about Oppenheimer but the Barbie movie is well on its way to making over $161 million over its opening weekend and to win the title for the biggest opening weekend of any film directed by a woman.
The title is held by “Captain Marvel” co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. It holds the record for any film with a female director with the $153 million it opened with in 2019.
But before then, Barbie will need to surpass the second highest held by Patty Jenkin’s “Wonder Woman” with $103 million in 2017. Regardless, it’s still a win for the co-stars of Barbie.
The movie is the best box office opening weekend numbers for Gerwig, Robbie and Ryan Gosling, 42. It is also one of the best all-time for a female-skewing movie.
Barbie is also one of the only movies that is not based on a superhero or an established franchise. Some of the cast include Will Ferrel, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon and Issa Rae.
Oppenheimer stars Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek and Robert Downey Jr.
