Throughout her 70-year reign, the Queen became known for her fondness of corgis, owning more than 30 in her lifetime.

Dr. Sarah Furness, Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, commissioned the piece, explaining she wanted something to portray her “as a Queen rather than as a person for posterity.”

She stated that she had been “inundated” with messages from people experiencing “personal bereavement,” and she wanted to make something to demonstrate Her Majesty’s “warmth and humanity.”

This will be Mr. Pratley’s first public sculpture in the United Kingdom, as well as the first dedicated memorial to the late Queen.

“Dr. Furness had a vision for a larger-than-life-size statue,” the sculpture said.

“My only criteria set by the statue committee were that they would like a young queen and they would like her to be dressed in state robes.”

Mr. Pratley stated that he was inspired by images of Her Majesty from the 1950s and 1960s.

“Her reign was a period of British history during which she represented something so hopeful – and that’s what people would like to be looking at as they gaze upon their statute,” he continued.

The finished sculpture will depict three corgis at the Queen’s feet, one of which will be jumping up.

Mr. Pratley stated that he wanted to portray the Queen as “mother of a nation,” with the dogs “able to shelter under Her Majesty.”

According to reports, King Charles has been invited to reveal the new statue when it is finished, and Mr. Pratley says they “haven’t heard the fateful word ‘no’ yet.”
