Tyler Perry who is a close friend of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has reportedly bagged a lucrative new deal to take over the cable channel BET.
According to reports, the 53-year-old actor and filmmaker have clinched a deal that will give him control of BET Media Group, which comes while its present owner, Paramount, is losing money.
Further specifics of the transaction, including its value, have yet to be revealed. The channel, which stands for Black Entertainment Television, has previously been chastised for propagating negative stereotypes about black Americans, with rapper Diddy recently demanding for it to be “black-owned again” as he joined the list of potential buyers.
Tyler, who has been in blockbuster programs like Sistas and Diary of a Mad Black Woman, as well as films including Don’t Look Up in 2021, Gone Girl in 2014, and the 2009 Star Trek remake, is one of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s closest friends.
He supposedly provided the Duke and Duchess of Sussex with his home and personal security during the coronavirus outbreak when they were left with nowhere to go after leaving Canada.
He is also reported to be the godfather of their two-year-old daughter Lilibet.
Tyler explained his actions at the time as merely wanting to help the couple during a “very difficult time for them,” adding that he wanted to “support them” in any way he could.
He praised the pair for leaving the royal family in a Netflix documentary, saying, “They just wanted to be free.”
