The generally mild-mannered Prince Edward hosted a charity fundraising show called ‘It’s a Royal Knockout’ on television in 1987, but it is claimed he “lost his temper” following the show’s lukewarm reaction.

In a series of challenges, members of the Royal Family competed against celebrities such as John Travolta, Cliff Richard, and Gary Linekar.

Ms. Willcox admitted the event was “pilloried,” saying, “I believe, for one second in time, it turned, there was a tipping point.” Prince Edward didn’t want the press milling around, and he went into the press tent and just said, “No, you guys are staying here.” “The entire atmosphere just flipped.”

According to the Mirror, she recalled in an episode of Channel 5’s ‘Now That’s Embarrassing: The 80s’ how the journalists that showed there responded with “nervous laughter” when he asked what they thought of the show. Unhappy Prince Edward stormed out of the press conference, thanking the reporters sarcastically for their enthusiasm.

She added: “They were hot, they were hungry and they had not seen anything in the flesh so they didn’t give him any reaction. They just dissed him and he lost his temper. That is the moment that is remembered of the whole event.”

Vanessa Feltz, a presenter, also commented on the occasion, saying, “He [Edward] wanted the press to big him up and tell him how fabulous it had been, but it hadn’t been fabulous.” It had been a monstrous carbuncle on the entire history of the Royal Family.”

In March of this year, King Charles bestowed the titles of Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh on Edward and his wife, Sophie.

It is a title closely linked with their father, Prince Philip, who served as Duke of Edinburgh for over 70 years until he died in 2021.

Prince Edward succeeded his father, Philip, as Duke of Edinburgh over two years after his father’s death. Philip was awarded the title in 1947 when he married Princess Elizabeth, who eventually became Queen Elizabeth II.
