Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson married on July 23, 1986, exactly one year after they began dating.
After ten years of marriage, the couple divorced in 1996.
The pair welcomed two children, Princess Beatrice, and Princess Eugenie, during their marriage.
The ex-couple are also grandparents to Beatrice’s one-year-old daughter, Sienna, and Eugenie’s two sons, August, two, and Ernest.
Despite the dissolution of their marriage, the former couple appear to be closer than ever, with their connection being seen as unusual.
Here’s a look at Andrew and Fergie’s odd relationship 37 years after their wedding day.
Andrew and Fergie started dating in 1985 after sitting next to one other at Royal Ascot.
Only nine months later, on Andrew’s 26th birthday in February 1986, the couple got engaged.
That July, the couple married, and their two children were born in 1988 and 1990.
Andrew’s naval job required him to spend less time with his family, and cracks began to show in the marriage. The couple divorced in 1996 after they separated in 1991.
Fergie claimed in a 2010 interview that because of Andrew’s profession, she only saw him 40 days a year during their marriage.
“My deal was that I was marrying my man, who happened to be a prince and a naval officer,” she explained.
“But what I got was not the man, I got the palace and didn’t get him… and the courtiers told me I had to go to Buckingham Palace and he had to go to sea.”
Despite their divorce, the couple still lives together at Royal Lodge when she visits the UK.
Sarah stated in a 2021 interview with the Sunday Times, “I travel a lot and I’ve always been able to make wherever I am home. If I am staying in a hotel I have the same family photographs and scented candles around me.
“When I’m in the UK I’m lucky enough to stay at Royal Lodge. I wouldn’t call it my home as that would be presumptuous.”
Rumors have spread throughout the years due to their close relationship. Sarah, on the other hand, appeared to put an end to rumors in the past, saying, “We’re the happiest divorced couple in the world.” We’re divorced to each other, not from each other.”
The pair has openly supported each other at various periods in their lives over the years.
Fergie has previously revealed to the Mirror how supportive Andrew is of her.
Around the time her novel ‘A Most Intriguing Lady’ was released, she told the publication, Andrew “tells me they [books] are fabulous.”
Fergie disclosed earlier this month that she had discovered she has breast cancer during a routine mammography, and Andrew stepped up to support her.
Sarah has also been seen supporting her ex-husband throughout the Jeffrey Epstein controversy, which Andrew has consistently denied.
“The Queen and I, when she was alive, we both bookended him to help him through this,” she told the Independent. So, we’re a very strong family unit. No one can break the York family.”
