Meghan Markle’s “too much baggage” is preventing her from creating her own solo brand.
According to a respected royal author Tom Bowyer, the empire she and her husband Prince Harry are striving to build is crumbling.
This week, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were among a small group of filmmakers nominated for a Hollywood Critics Award for their Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan.
It would have undoubtedly provided the pair a much-needed boost after a slew of issues in their post-royal existence emerged this year, the most recent of which was the termination of their partnership with audio service provider Spotify.
According to Mr. Bower, their time at the top may be coming to an end much sooner than some insiders expect.
Mr. Bower told OK! that the couple’s “joint ventures are falling apart,” citing an Oprah Winfrey interview from two years ago as a driving reason.
The couple was famously interviewed by a CBS journalist in an intimate two-hour show, during which Harry and Meghan dropped a slew of bombshells about their lives within Buckingham Palace.
“They are beginning to taste the medicine that they handed out during the Oprah Winfrey interview,” Mr. Bower said. They’re finding it very, very hard to keep their brand reputable.”
“They’re constantly having to defend themselves, and they’re grasping for opportunities that don’t exist anymore.”
Despite their desire for a private life away from the public eye as a result of their powerful responsibilities on the Royal Family’s frontbenches, the pair continued to speak out about the Firm.
In addition to their Netflix documentary, Harry spoke about his family in the pages of his autobiography Spare, which became one of history’s fastest-selling books.
Potential suitors for future agreements may be put off by Meghan and Harry’s apparent willingness to reveal their royal past at will, according to Mr. Bower.
“I don’t think Meghan has a brand to sell because she’s so controversial,” he said. She brings too much baggage to it all now. They’re both facing problems.”
“All she’s got is the baggage of the Oprah Winfrey interview and her damnation of the royal family in various successive interviews,” the royal insider continued.
“That’s why she’s been so quiet the whole year. She knows they’ve probably gone too far and she doesn’t know how to get out of it now.”
Mr. Bower’s comments came less than a month after Meghan and Harry returned the keys to the Royal Family for Frogmore Cottage, the lovely property bequeathed to them by the late Queen Elizabeth II – Harry’s grandmother.
After the publication of Spare in January, King Charles III ordered the couple to depart the home.
