According to a source close to the family, Queen Elizabeth II “saw through Meghan Markle” and even called the Duchess of Sussex “evil” during a cocktail function at Balmoral in August of last year.
The 96-year-old monarch is said to have delivered the scathing remarks during a drinks reception for dinner at Balmoral, barely one month before her death.
The reported remarks occurred at a low period in Meghan and Harry’s relationship with the Firm, when the Duchess of Sussex implied that someone in the Royal Family had subjected her to prejudice.
The source close to the family claimed to The Spectator that “everybody’s eyebrows hit the ceiling” when the Queen allegedly made the remarks about Meghan.
“It was out of character for the Queen to use such a word as ‘evil’ to describe Meghan, but she saw straight through her. It was a startling sentence to hear from the most forgiving woman on earth,” the source said.
The source added: “At the drinks before the dinner, a small group was talking to the monarch and she explained that Harry meeting Meghan had become a complete catastrophe and described her as evil.
“By this point, we all knew the Queen’s health was in decline and she had months left, she seemed regretful about how things had panned out.”
Before the Queen’s death, a royal schism developed between the Sussexes and the rest of the family, which has subsequently widened.
In an event named Megxit, Meghan and Harry stepped away from royal life and relocated to the United States in 2020 to explore a multitude of media businesses and philanthropic endeavors.

One memorable episode occurred in 2021 when the Royal Family became embroiled in a race debate after Meghan implied she had faced racism during an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
“In those months when I was pregnant…we have in tandem the conversation of, ‘He won’t be given security. He’s not going to be given a title, and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born,” she alleged to the TV megastar.
The Duchess told Oprah “There were several conversations about it” but refused to reveal who made the alleged comments, saying: “I think that would be very damaging to them.”
When questioned further, she said: “That was relayed to me from Harry. Those were conversations that the family had with him…It was really hard to be able to see those as compartmentalized conversations.”
Tensions between the Sussexes and the rest of the royals have only seemed to rise after the Queen’s death.
The publication of Prince Harry’s tell-all memoir in January proved to be the tipping point.
The Duke qualified Meghan’s words about Spare’s release in an interview with writer Tom Bradby in January.

When asked about his wife’s comments to Oprah in March 2021, the Duke responded, “Yeah, there were concerns about his skin color.”
When asked if he would call that “essentially racist,” Harry said, “I wouldn’t.” Not having lived within that family.”
