Joe Biden will be received by King Charles in Windsor Castle, just months after the US President sent his wife Jill Biden instead of appearing himself at King Charles’ Coronation.

The White House confirmed Monday that Mr. Biden will meet with King Charles and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak during his upcoming visit to the United Kingdom.

The US president will arrive in the United Kingdom on July 9 before traveling to the Baltic two days later for talks about Russia and the invasion of Ukraine.

It will be Mr. Biden’s first meeting with Charles since he was crowned King.

He attended Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral last year and met Charles at the Cop26 environmental summit in 2021.

The visit comes less than a month after Mr. Biden shocked an audience in New England by saying, “God save the Queen, man.”

Before Queen Elizabeth II’s death in September last year, the president was the 13th and final president to meet her.

Mr. Biden attended her funeral in September 2022, but the first lady attended the Coronation on behalf of the United States.

“President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. spoke today with King Charles III, underscoring the strength of the relationship between our countries and the friendship between our people,” a readout of the call released by the White House read before the event.

“The President congratulated the King on his upcoming Coronation and informed him that First Lady Jill Biden looks forward to attending on behalf of the United States,” the statement continued.

While many in the UK saw this as a snub, Mr. Biden was following the usual tradition for US presidents by sending Ms. Biden in his place, as no US President has ever attended the coronation of a British monarch.

President Dwight Eisenhower was invited to Queen Elizabeth’s, but he rejected and sent a delegation instead.

“President Biden is scheduled to travel to the United Kingdom, Lithuania, and Finland from July 9-13,” said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre of Mr. Biden’s upcoming visit.

“The President will then travel to Vilnius, Lithuania from July 11-12 to attend the 74th Nato Summit.”

“On July 13, President Biden will visit Helsinki, Finland for a US-Nordic Leaders Summit. More details about the trip will be announced soon.”

The trip also marks an opportunity for Mr. Biden to repair his strained relationship with Mr. Sunak.

It will be the sixth meeting between the two leaders since Sunak took office in October, though the US President has not been modest about criticizing the UK during this period.

Mr. Biden claimed in May that he visited Ireland early this year to ensure that the “Brits didn’t screw around,” amid persistent US worry about the impact of Brexit on the peace process.
