The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have finally left Frogmore Cottage after being served with an eviction notice by the King earlier this year.

The Keeper of the Privy Purse, Sir Michael Stevens, confirmed that Prince Harry and Meghan had departed the five-bedroom house on the Windsor estate.

A top royal official, however, stressed that no decision had been made on who would now live in the house, despite claims that the King would like to encourage his brother Prince Andrew to downsize from his seven-bedroom Royal Lodge mansion and live at Frogmore Cottage.

The house, which was previously divided into apartments for workers, cost British taxpayers £2.4 million to convert into a residence for Harry and Meghan, and once the couple left official royal duties, they repaid the money in an arrangement that also covered several years’ rent.

It is unclear whether the Sussexes were able to recoup some of their losses after being evicted.

“We can confirm that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have vacated Frogmore Cottage,” said Sir Michael, the King’s most senior financial advisor.

“We will not be going into any detail on those arrangements here, save to say that as has previously been stated, the Duke and Duchess have paid for the expenditure incurred by the Sovereign Grant in relation to the renovation of Frogmore Cottage, thus leaving the Crown with a greatly enhanced asset.”

The cottage, which Queen Victoria purchased in the nineteenth century, is now part of the taxpayer-funded Occupied Royal Palaces estate.

Prince Andrew on the other hand, has a 75-year lease from the independent Crown Estate on Royal Lodge, which he aims to renovate in the coming months.

According to sources, the Prince has refused to leave his residence, which he shares with his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York.

“Andrew is adamant that he is staying at Royal Lodge for the remainder of his lease,” a source told OK! magazine earlier this year.

“He will not move into Frogmore without a fight. Royal Lodge is his home and he will do everything in his power to remain in the property.”

During a recent three-day visit, Prince Harry allegedly spent three nights in Frogmore Cottage, which had previously served as the couple’s base in the UK.

Meghan and Harry reportedly stayed at the residence with their two children, Archie and Lilibet, during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations last June.
