Madonna and Sam Smith’s new single, the ballroom-influenced dance track “Vulgar,” was released on Friday, June 9.

The duo teamed up to give us this summer jam, just months after Madonna introduced Sam Smith for their performance with Kim Petras at the 2023 Grammy Awards.

In “Vulgar,” Sam continues down the sensual path they started with “Unholy,” strolling hand in hand with a woman who knows a thing or two about getting sensuous, raunchy, and downright dirty.

The frantic single, which was released at midnight, is replete with heat and passion, and the beat is unstoppable.

“Vulgar is beautiful/filthy and gorgeous / Vulgar will make you dance/don’t need a chorus / Say we’re ridiculous / we’ll just go harder / Mad and meticulous / Sam and Madonna,” they sing at the end of the song.

The two announced the track on May 31 by sharing some artwork: a black and white shot of two tightly laced corsets with the duo’s initials spelling out “S&M” – a tribute to the “sadism/masochism” parts of BDSM.

The reveal came after a week of teasing, with Smith uploading a looping audio recording on their social media platforms in which the two groaned “Sam and Madonna” (per Billboard).

Madonna also teased fans with a sneak peek of the song on social media. ” Let’s get into the groove / you know just what to do / Boy, get down on your knees / ‘Cause I’m Madonna / If you fuck with Sam tonight, you’re fucking with me / So watch what you say or I’ll split your banana / We do what we want, we say what we have to / We do what we want, we say what we have to / We’re sexy, liberated, and in love.”

While Madonna’s preview referred to her 1985 song “Into The Groove,” Sam’s preview referred to…Madonna! “Look like I’m dressed to kill, love how I make me feel / All black in stripper heels, move like Madonna / Rich like I’m in the Louvre, got nothin’ left to prove / You know you’re beautiful when they call you vulgar / I do what I wanna, go when I gotta / I’m sexy, I’m free and I feel / Vulgar.”

“Unholy,” which was released in 2022, was included in Sam’s 2023 album, Gloria.

They stated on June 7 that their vocal cords were recovering “after a week of vocal rest.”

“I honestly don’t know what to say. “I battled a virus a few weeks ago, and since then, we’ve traveled across Europe and put on such incredible shows,” Sam wrote. “I noticed something wrong with my voice during my third song.”

I hoped it was simply my voice warming up for the event, but after the fourth song, I knew something was seriously wrong.

I exited the stage and did everything to get my voice back in gear, but it won’t. I am so heartbroken that I was unable to continue the show tonight for you all.”

Sam’s North American tour takes up on July 25 in Miami.
