Rich first rose to fame in the 1970s as Nicholas Bradford, the youngest son of the Bradford family, on “Eight Is Enough.”

The ABC show, which starred Dick Van Patten, Lani O’Grady, Connie Needham, Grant Goodeve, and others, aired from 1977 to 1981.

“I think he’s why the show was a big success,” Van Patten, who died in 2015, stated of his former co-star in a 2011 TV Academy Foundation interview with Stephen J. Abramson.

“People loved him! Fans named a child Nicholas and everything after him,” he went on.

“He was cute and he was a good actor.” He was very natural.”

Despite his great career, his personal life was in disarray due to drug addiction.

In 1991, he was arrested for smashing a drugstore window to purchase drugs before being bailed out by his former TV father, Van Patten.

Rich was detained for the second time in 2002 on suspicion of driving under the influence after nearly colliding with a California Highway Patrol car.

Rich, according to CBS News, denied the claims at the time, telling reporters, “I’ve been sober for 10 years.”
