Oppenheimer and Barbie will be released in the U.S. on July 21. Though with sharp contrast, both movies are set to compete at the box office.
Movie lovers are in for a swell time as AMC Theatres, the largest theatres chain report that more than 20,000 people have bought tickets to see both movies on the same day.
The anticipated competition between the two has become well known that it even got the nickname “Barbenheimer”.
While people think that this is not good considering their different genres. Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan says it is a good thing.
Nolan also believes the competition between both movies is ‘terrific.’ ‘Summer, in a healthy marketplace, is always crowded, and we’ve been doing this a long time,’ Nolan told IGN.
‘I think for those of us who care about movies, we’ve been waiting to have a crowded marketplace again, and now it’s here and that’s terrific.’
Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy also told IGN that it is a positive thing. ‘I think it’s great. I mean, I’ll be going to see Barbie. I can’t wait to see it.”
‘I think it’s just great for the industry and for audiences that we have two amazing films by amazing filmmakers coming out the same day. Could spend a whole day in the cinema, what’s better than that?’
Barbie and Oppenheimer hope to recoup their investments since production cost quite a fortune. More than $100m was spent on each and so the stage is almost set for the release date.
As stated above, there is a contrast in both films. Barbie features Barbie and Ken’s dream-like life in Barbie Land until they are forced to live among humans, and then realise the real world isn’t as blissful.
On the other hand, Oppenheimer is a doom and gloom drama about the scientist known as the father of the Atomic bomb.
Critics say both films show promise and that there is a growing Oscar buzz for some of the leading stars, most notably Margot Robbie (Barbie), Ryan Gosling (Ken), and Cillian Murphy (J. Robert Oppenheimer).
We are now counting the days to see the most anticipated movies of the month if not the year. And we are lucky, they are coming out the same day.
