Princess Eugenie’s name choice for her son is a touching tribute to her mother, Sarah Ferguson, as she explained the meaning behind each of his names on Instagram.
On Monday, the young royal announced the birth of her second son Ernest George Ronnie on the social media platform, a younger brother to her and husband Jack Brooksbank’s two-year-old son August.

Eugenie included two photos of baby Ernest in the post, one of him sleeping in his Moses basket while wearing a knitted blue and white hat and another of big brother August sweetly stroking his head.
She explained the meaning of each of his three names underneath, as his middle names were inspired by several family members, including a former king.
“Jack and I wanted to share the news that we had our little boy, Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank on 30th May 2023 at 8.49 weighing 7.1lbs,” Eugenie wrote.
“He was named after his great-great-great-grandfather George, his grandfather George, and my grandfather Ronald.”
“Augie is already enjoying being a big brother.”

Ernest’s great-great-great grandfather George is George V, the late Queen Elizabeth’s grandfather, who reigned from May 1910 until his death in December 1936 and had Ernest as one of his middle names.
His first middle name, George, is a loving tribute to Jack’s late father and the baby’s grandfather, George Brooksbank, who died in November 2021 at the age of 72 after a long battle with Covid.
Fergie’s second middle name, Ronnie, is named after his late father, Ronald Ferguson, who was known as the “galloping major” and died in 2003.
Baby Ernest is the 13th in line to the British throne, the third grandchild of Fergie and Prince Andrew, and the second nephew of Princess Beatrice.
His arrival drops Prince Edward to 14th and Princess Anne to 17th, even though she was third in line at the time of her birth.
He will not be given a title or HRH status because he is not a grandchild of the current monarch, King Charles.
Eugenie and Jack, who married in October 2018, announced the birth of their first child, August Philip Hawke, in February 2021, who is also named after a family member.
August’s first middle name is named after Eugenie’s grandfather, Prince Philip, who died in April of that year, just weeks after August was born on February 9.
Eugenie became emotional in a documentary released in September 2021 when she revealed Philip was able to meet baby August shortly before his death.
“We named August, August Philip because Grandpa has been such a huge, inspiring character in my life,” she explained. I brought little August to meet him and told him we named him after him, and it was such a lovely moment.”
